Confidence Within Kay

                                                            Confidence Within Kay

Greetings, my name is Kay, and I am currently taking the course Who I am I. In this course we are learning about our identities and thinking about things in a complex way. Some of our focus topics can be classified as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, socioeconomic status, religion and more. during this term we have also looked at situations that are related to these topics and talked about them in a different perspective. We are also reading a book of our choice that is related to our identity for my book I choose Citizen by Claudia Rankine. For this action project I was assigned the job of making a comic book that demonstrates my struggles or joys that relates to my identity, while connecting my book and the focus topics I have learned about.

For my comic book I decided to tell true stories so that it could be the4 most authentic to my identity. These stories consist of the main character Kay (me) overcoming bullying and insecurities while also finding herself. Kay is bullied for her skin color, and hair because she is darkskin with 4C "nappy" hair. "Nappy" hair is a term that has been used to oppress black girls with different hair textures it also used in the black community, but I think it shouldn't be used because it makes young girls feel ashamed of their hair type. In middle school they stop focusing on Kay's outer appearance and start bullying her for how she carries herself. Kay is a proper girl she has nice things like designer while going to a school in poverty, this provokes kids' jealousy and causes them to bully her. The bullies call kay an "Oreo" which is a derogatory term for black girls who "act white." Kay's own friends turn on her, she tries to tell her mother about her experience, but her mom brushes it off. This causes Kay to feel very alone in her sorrows, she asks her mom to pull her out of this school and her mom agrees. During her 7th grade year, she discovers Nicki Minaj and Serena Williams. These women make her feel empowered and help her gain her confidence. This part is connected to my selective book because Serena Williams was a woman who went through racial oppression in the book.

In conclusion, this project has helped me to dissect my past and how it is connected to my identity. This was a very challenging action project for me given the lack of my artistic talent, and the time span I had to complete this.

Homemade Batteries

                                                                Homemade Batteries

Hello, my name is K.W and I am in 9th grade currently taking the class called energy. In this class we have been learning about SDG 7 which is talking about sustainable modern energy. We have also learned about KWH, Slope, graphs, algebra and we have also discussed different types of batteries like flywheel, and gravity. For this action project we were tasked with building batteries.

My hypothesis was that my battery would be lower than a lime because a lime is more acidic than an orange. The materials I used were an orange, a penny and a nickel for metal, these serve as my electrolytes and cathodes and anodes.

Original Battery Idea

Unfortunately, this idea did not work out and I had change course and use Gatorade as my electrolytes. My new Hypothesis was that I wasn't going to get higher than 0.10.

Gatorade and Nickel & Penny
This first process can be classified as you are taking your coins and putting them in the orange and then trying to measure the voltage but that didn't work. Therefore, I had to switch my orange out for Gatorade and retest the voltage and it came out to 0.01. Meaning that I would have to 150 of my batteries to equal 1 double A battery and 10,000 of my batteries to have 100 watts. After I did this, I tried again with distilled water as my electrolytes and the voltage came out 0.00.
Distilled Water
In conclusion, this was an easy action project although there were a couple of bumps in the road, I still navigated my way through. If I were to do this project again, I would change my materials because I was only able to get 0.01 volts which is very low. Overall, I am grateful that I can incorporate math into projects and enjoy it.

The Price To Pay

Hello, My name is K.W and I am taking the course Energy. In this course I have learned various things about math and science relating to power and energy. In class we have done experiments such as measuring voltage, using kinetic energy and water to measure distance, and we have also had engineers come into class to speak to us about Energy. During this course we are learning about algebra, slope, ratios, graphs, function notation, chemistry and more. For this action project I was assigned the task of comparing to appliances using the math & science I learned and making and infomercial for the appliance I want to advertise.

Graph Winia vs Premium Levella

For my action project I decided to compare two refrigerators specifically the premium levella and the Winia fridge. The refrigerator I am trying to advertise is the Premium levella because of the low cost of KWH/ KWY. The Premium levella fridge may cost 532.984 but the kwh is 344 so, It will save you in the future. The Winia fridge may cost 529.00$ but the KWH/KWY is 365 so it will cost you more on your energy bill, which is why the Premium levella is the best option.  In 20 years the Winia fridge will cost you 1550.9$ but the Premium levella will cost you 1496.18$ saving you a lot of money on your energy bill.

Overall, I enjoyed this action project but it was not easy. This action project really challenged my brain and required a lot of mathematical knowledge. If I could change anything about my project it would be my video because it was very low quality due to my poor technology access.https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uFSB6_op5SaXiKOJE4ktAbVFY4ivyARo/view?usp=drive_web&authuser=0
