Guerilla Gardening with Pumpkin Spice

                                                     Guerilla Gardening with Pumpkin Spice

Greetings, my name is K.W and I am currently taking the course Food. In this class we have been learning many things science and math wise about the ecosystem and gardening. Some of the topics we have discussed are micro and macro nutrients, Darwin vs Fukuoka autotrophs, hetrophs, saprotrophs, cycles involving carbon, water, and nitrogen, abundance, distribution etc. In the mathematics case we have been mainly discussing geometry and perimeter, area, and volume, we have also been discussing scaling and how that affects gardens. For this action project I was assigned to make my own garden recycling something from home which is also known as Guerilla Gardening.

For my garden I decided to go with a Halloween theme and use an old candy basket, I also added a fake finger to point me to where I planted my seeds. This is my Halloween themed garden, now I will take through the steps of making this garden. First, I got soil and filled my bucket up with the soil, next I planted flowers and added lettuce seeds. Then I added my fake finger, added water, and placed in a sunny place. I also took measurements of the height and circumference of the bucket. I also did the math of the volume and conversion factor of my garden. Equally as interesting, this project was partially inspired by Ron Finley a magnificent guerilla gangsta gardener. He is gardening and giving back to the community to help with food insecurity. He is always taking back the word gangsta and giving it a new meaning- hip, cool, innovative, revolutionary, resolute, vital, and cutting edge.

Garden
     Volume- 3.14 x radius x radius x height- 3.14 x 2.75 x 2.75 x 7 volume=166.223
Weight of small cup of soil- 2.7 grams
Conversion Factor- 15.984
Weight of Soil in garden- 983.745

Summing this all up, this action project was one of the easiest and most fun out of the projects I have done for this class. This was a project that allowed creativity to be showcased, yet also exhibited what I have learned. If I were to do anything differently, I would have switched my basket for something that doesn't curve in because its blocking sunlight access.

Fried Chicken In a New Light

Fried Chicken In a New Light

Greetings, my name is K.W and I currently taking the course Food For Thought. In this class we have been uncovering many things that are related to food. For example, we have watched many documentaries explaining how the food industry is corrupt and how much it has differentiated from its original stance. We have also read various texts that talk about the origins of food, and exploring how food impacts our everyday life. In addition, the class has helped me to understand how food relates to interpersonal, intuitional, internalized, and structural racism and oppression For this action project I was given the assignment of taking one of my favorite foods and create a cooking tutorial for that food and explain the history of the ingredients.

For my action project I connected my dish to a lot of the course topics from this unit. For example, the book How the Other Half Eats, and two poems that we have read during this course. In the text it states, “Julie had an abundance of opportunities for her kids while Nyah didn't, so Julie didn't have to use food as a daily buffer against hardship, Julie’s context also meant that saying no to junk food wasn't as emotionally distressing to her as a mother, what was one no in a light of a thousand yeses” 1634. This meant that Nyah as a mother couldn't provide that much for her children and food was one of the few things she could afford. “As I had seen how the human need to eat unites us, but the way that each of us meets that need pushes us further apart.” Fried chicken is a food that is derived from negativity and can be used as a social status which proves how this statement is relative to me. “Nyah navigated stigma and judgment simply for existing and raising her kids s the woman she was” chapter 7 This meant that Nyah fed her kids what she knew would make them happy because she could only give them so much, and this relates to me because I feel as though my mother rewards me with food too and that it may not be the best lifestyle everybody parents differently. “My mind wandered into the stereotypes portraying low-income moms unconcerned about their kids' diets” I feel like this is an example of interpersonal and internalized racism because the only reason low-income moms can't provide an abundance of nutritional value for their kids is because of the structural oppression that makes it hard to do so. Those are my connections to the book How The other Half Eats. These are my connections to the poems, ‘From blossoms comes this brown paper bag of peaches that we brought from this boy” - food brings new meaning and opportunities and can take something simple and make it into a lifestyle.

In conclusion, this action project was very difficult because I am not a good cook and this was actually my first time cooking fried chicken, and I am also not good with technology. Therefore, this made editing the video, taking the video, and everything of that nature difficult for me. If I were to go back and re-do this project, I would change the time I spent cooking and editing. Overall, this was challenging only because of the editing and technology aspect.

Confidence Within Kay

                                                            Confidence Within Kay

Greetings, my name is Kay, and I am currently taking the course Who I am I. In this course we are learning about our identities and thinking about things in a complex way. Some of our focus topics can be classified as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, socioeconomic status, religion and more. during this term we have also looked at situations that are related to these topics and talked about them in a different perspective. We are also reading a book of our choice that is related to our identity for my book I choose Citizen by Claudia Rankine. For this action project I was assigned the job of making a comic book that demonstrates my struggles or joys that relates to my identity, while connecting my book and the focus topics I have learned about.

For my comic book I decided to tell true stories so that it could be the4 most authentic to my identity. These stories consist of the main character Kay (me) overcoming bullying and insecurities while also finding herself. Kay is bullied for her skin color, and hair because she is darkskin with 4C "nappy" hair. "Nappy" hair is a term that has been used to oppress black girls with different hair textures it also used in the black community, but I think it shouldn't be used because it makes young girls feel ashamed of their hair type. In middle school they stop focusing on Kay's outer appearance and start bullying her for how she carries herself. Kay is a proper girl she has nice things like designer while going to a school in poverty, this provokes kids' jealousy and causes them to bully her. The bullies call kay an "Oreo" which is a derogatory term for black girls who "act white." Kay's own friends turn on her, she tries to tell her mother about her experience, but her mom brushes it off. This causes Kay to feel very alone in her sorrows, she asks her mom to pull her out of this school and her mom agrees. During her 7th grade year, she discovers Nicki Minaj and Serena Williams. These women make her feel empowered and help her gain her confidence. This part is connected to my selective book because Serena Williams was a woman who went through racial oppression in the book.

In conclusion, this project has helped me to dissect my past and how it is connected to my identity. This was a very challenging action project for me given the lack of my artistic talent, and the time span I had to complete this.

Homemade Batteries

                                                                Homemade Batteries

Hello, my name is K.W and I am in 9th grade currently taking the class called energy. In this class we have been learning about SDG 7 which is talking about sustainable modern energy. We have also learned about KWH, Slope, graphs, algebra and we have also discussed different types of batteries like flywheel, and gravity. For this action project we were tasked with building batteries.

My hypothesis was that my battery would be lower than a lime because a lime is more acidic than an orange. The materials I used were an orange, a penny and a nickel for metal, these serve as my electrolytes and cathodes and anodes.

Original Battery Idea

Unfortunately, this idea did not work out and I had change course and use Gatorade as my electrolytes. My new Hypothesis was that I wasn't going to get higher than 0.10.

Gatorade and Nickel & Penny
This first process can be classified as you are taking your coins and putting them in the orange and then trying to measure the voltage but that didn't work. Therefore, I had to switch my orange out for Gatorade and retest the voltage and it came out to 0.01. Meaning that I would have to 150 of my batteries to equal 1 double A battery and 10,000 of my batteries to have 100 watts. After I did this, I tried again with distilled water as my electrolytes and the voltage came out 0.00.
Distilled Water
In conclusion, this was an easy action project although there were a couple of bumps in the road, I still navigated my way through. If I were to do this project again, I would change my materials because I was only able to get 0.01 volts which is very low. Overall, I am grateful that I can incorporate math into projects and enjoy it.

The Price To Pay

Hello, My name is K.W and I am taking the course Energy. In this course I have learned various things about math and science relating to power and energy. In class we have done experiments such as measuring voltage, using kinetic energy and water to measure distance, and we have also had engineers come into class to speak to us about Energy. During this course we are learning about algebra, slope, ratios, graphs, function notation, chemistry and more. For this action project I was assigned the task of comparing to appliances using the math & science I learned and making and infomercial for the appliance I want to advertise.

Graph Winia vs Premium Levella

For my action project I decided to compare two refrigerators specifically the premium levella and the Winia fridge. The refrigerator I am trying to advertise is the Premium levella because of the low cost of KWH/ KWY. The Premium levella fridge may cost 532.984 but the kwh is 344 so, It will save you in the future. The Winia fridge may cost 529.00$ but the KWH/KWY is 365 so it will cost you more on your energy bill, which is why the Premium levella is the best option.  In 20 years the Winia fridge will cost you 1550.9$ but the Premium levella will cost you 1496.18$ saving you a lot of money on your energy bill.

Overall, I enjoyed this action project but it was not easy. This action project really challenged my brain and required a lot of mathematical knowledge. If I could change anything about my project it would be my video because it was very low quality due to my poor technology access.https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uFSB6_op5SaXiKOJE4ktAbVFY4ivyARo/view?usp=drive_web&authuser=0

My Ideal Utopia

                                                                     Utopia

Hello, my name is K.W and I am taking the course Who am I. In this course we are diving deep into our inner selves and exploring the complex topic of identity. Some of the topics we covered were race, ethnicity, religion, heritage, gender & sexuality. We have also looked at different scenarios to decipher the different things that play a role in who you are. For this action project we have to create our own ideal 3D Utopia and explain how it relates to our identity.

In my Utopia I incorporated various things and used a lot of symbolism. Most of the things in my Utopia are from my childhood because my upbringing is the most precious to my identity. Here are some of the main things in my Utopia and the reasons behind it.  The color pink is important to me because pink is my favorite color, it has been my favorite color for the entirety of my life span. In the color pink I feel most confident. There would be no utopia without the color pink. There also would be lots of people because I am an extrovert, and I like to talk, meet new people, and express myself. The people here would only be dark skin and brown skin of all ages. Preferably the people would be my fans or have the same opinions as me, to avoid confrontation because I despise arguments. In addition, I don't like feeling alone. In my utopia there would be lots of animals including my dog Daisy, specifically a bunny with clothes on it because my love for fashion started with doll clothes. In the Christian religion heaven is supposed to have every animal and they are friendly, so ideally this would be the same thing for my utopia. Along with that I am a huge animal lover. Staying on topic of the Christian religion there would be no nighttime just like heaven. I like this idea because I am scared of the dark, and there's no need to feel threatened, no need to come inside at a certain time because it's unsafe like in my neighborhood. In my utopia I will also have a garden with fresh produce. In the hood we don't have access to these things and often have to travel out of our neighborhood for these things. Nicki Minaj would also be included because she is my role model and my inspiration.  I included an unfolding shell because it symbolizes that although I know who I am I still have so much to learn, and I am still coming out of my shell. I also included my family as a foundation because my family means everything to me, and they raised me to be the person who I am today. I don't know where I'd be without them. As Well as my grandma's house which was the hangout spot for me, and a place that I think of as a sanctuary.

This project helped to understand that I still don't know who I am yet. I know basic knowledge like my ethnicity, and my religion and how that plays into who I am, but I still am figuring out who I am, and why. Although, I do understand that my childhood has shaped me in many ways and is something very dear to me. This project was also very challenging for me because I haven't thought about my identity on this level yet, therefore I was puzzled when it came to making a utopia.

La Casa Kaylee

                                                                 La Casa Kaylee

Hello, my name is K.W and I am in Spanish 1. In this class we are learning about different rooms of a house other known as La Casa and how to conjugate IR, ER, AR verbs. Conjugating these verbs also changes the tense of these verbs in relation to present, past, and future tense. The only thing that was challenging to me was conjugating the verbs because I didn't know what to drop and what to replace the ending with. I also struggled with writing sentences because I am not fluent in Spanish yet and I'm still learning the names to certain objects.

My design I created via Roblox bloxburg
Original design with actions I can do in the different rooms of La Casa

Grammar Examples

El comedor Yo como papas fritas

La cocina Cocino pasta

El dormitorio Yo  duermo

La sala Yo veo la televisión

Ordeno la casa

Limpio el dormitorio

Leo librios

Escribo poemas La comeda está en la cocina

El televisi’on esta’ la sala

In conclusion, this action project was an easy task to complete, the most challenging part was creating sentences, and conjugating the different verbs. Overall, I am grateful to be learning Spanish and proud of myself for not giving up.

Live your truth
